HAW COVID-19 Policies for Clients:

The CDC currently states:

“There is no evidence that COVID-19 can spread to people through the water used in pools.”

The policies and procedures detailed below are mandatory for all Head Above Water clients in order for Head Above Water to provide services safely and responsibly in the wake of COVID-19. It is Head Above Water’s utmost priority to keep all clients and their swim instructors healthy. These policies are subject to change at Head Above Water’s discretion.

ILLNESS POLICIES

  • Under no circumstances should a client attend their swim lesson if the swimmer (or the caregiver bringing the swimmer to the lesson) is sick, experiencing symptoms of illness, or if there has been any exposure to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. In these cases, client must contact the HAW office immediately so that the swim lesson(s) can be canceled.

  • Parents should screen themselves and their child/children before leaving home to come to the property.  Anyone with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 including fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or new loss of taste or smell should remain at home in isolation.

  • All Swim Instructors have been informed that under no circumstances should he/she come to work if they are sick, experiencing symptoms of illness, or if they have been exposed to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. In this case, the Swim Instructor has been instructed to contact the HAW office immediately so that his/her lessons can be canceled and rescheduled. The HAW office will then reach out to the client to discuss the options for a substitute teacher or reschedule the class for an alternate date.

  • Your Swim Instructor has complete authority to cancel your swim lesson at any time if Instructor observe anyone attending the swim lesson experiencing symptoms of illness

CANCELLATION POLICY

 

  • Head Above Water’s normal cancellation policy is as follows:

All cancellations must be made 24 hours before your scheduled lesson via the Head Above Water Mobile App or directly with the Head Above Water Office via email, text, or phone call (instructors are not responsible for relaying any information). A cancellation made with less than 24-hour notice will result in your lesson being forfeited and no make up lesson offered. This policy includes cancellations for sickness, weather (rain/cold), and any other reason.

  • ​For the time being and until decided otherwise by Head Above Water, the following has been added to the cancellation policy:

We will not offer lessons if the swimmer (or the caregiver bringing the swimmer to the lesson) is sick, experiencing symptoms of illness, or if there has been any exposure to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. Similarly, your Swim Instructor will cancel the lesson if they are sick, experiencing any symptoms of illness, or are exposed to anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19. In these cases, your swim lesson will be canceled. If anyone is experiencing symptoms less than 24 hours before the lesson and you need to cancel your class, please email or call us as soon as possible to discuss your options. As a courtesy to your Swim Instructor, please contact the office as soon as feasibly possible when you need to cancel a lesson due to illness.

CLIENT FACE MASK POLICIES

 

  • Face masks/coverings must be worn at all times (covering mouth and nose), by all individuals while on the property. Caregivers must keep their mask on at all times, whether in the water or not. Swimmers will not wear masks while in the swimming pool, but must keep a mask on outside f the pool area if they are waiting for their turn (if age-appropriate).

SWIM INSTRUCTOR FACE MASK POLICIES

  • Swim Instructor will have face mask and/or face shield on (covering mouth and nose) at all times while on the property, including before, during, and after the lesson, with some exceptions:

    • During the swim lesson, Instructor will keep mask/shield on at all times. The only exception to this shall be when an Instructor needs to demonstrate something to the swimmer where the Instructor’s face or mouth must be in the water. In this case, Instructor may temporarily remove mask/shield, demonstrate skill, and then replace mask/shield.

CLEANING POLICIES

 

  • Soap and water is available in the bathroom for hand washing as well as single-use disposable paper hand towels for drying hands. 

  • Hand Sanitizer is available in multiple areas including at entrance/exit and in seating areas.

  • Pool toys/equipment will be sanitized frequently.  

  • The property will be routinely cleaned and disinfected, with particular attention paid to frequently touched surfaces such as bathroom door handle, light switches, sink handles, and toilet handle.

  • There will be cleaning supplies readily available on the property at all times.

LOGISTICAL POLICIES

  • Each family is limited to one (1) caregiver who can be on the property per one swimmer.

  • Clients may not enter the backyard more than five (5) minutes before their scheduled lesson time. If a client arrives early and waiting in their car is not feasible, client may use the front yard seating area to wait until their lesson time is approaching. Please enter the property as close to your official lesson start time as feasibly possible.

  • The side gate will be remain propped open during business hours so as to allow the entrance/exit to be “hands-free.”

  • Clients should use caution when entering through the side gate in order to allow all families to keep a 6-foot distance at all times. That is, if you are walking in and you see another family walking out, please wait to the side to allow the family who is exiting to do so before you enter.

  • Upon entering through the side gate, clients must use the hand sanitizer provided (or use their own hand sanitizer). It is also recommended to use the hand sanitizer upon exiting.

  • While on the property, clients must maintain an approximate 6-foot distance between them and any other family present as well as between them and the Swim Instructor.

  • If you enter the backyard and the client before you is still present, you must use the secondary seating area (nearest to the house) until the family before you has completely exited the seating area under the pergola. Under no circumstances may two separate families sit in the pergola seating area at the same time. Please be courteous to the client before/after you in entering/exiting the seating areas in a timely fashion.

  • For the time being, all lessons will be reduced by five (5) minutes so as to allow time for swimmer in the water to exit the pool, dry off/change, and allow the family to gather their belongings and exit the premises as well as provide time for the HAW staff to disinfect any touched surfaces and still allow for the next client to begin their class at their scheduled start time.

  • Client must leave the property immediately upon completion of lesson. Drying off and changing clothes is allowed but a client should not remain on the property for any more than five (5) minutes after the completion of their lesson.

  • The restroom will be available for use but please refrain from using it unless absolutely necessary. As much as possible, changing clothes should be done on the deck (if age-appropriate).

OTHER POLICIES

  • Swim Instructor may employ a minimal use of toys/equipment during the lesson. Instructor will keep all toys/equipment that are not presently being used in a spot out of the swimmer’s direct reach as to avoid the swimmer excessively touching toys/equipment unnecessarily.

  • There is no eating allowed on the property.

  • There will be friendly, yet firm communication regarding these safety policies and it is understood that both Swim Instructor and client will abide by all procedures outlined.

  • Client should contact the HAW office if there are any issues or concerns related to the instructor’s adherence to the safety protocols.

  • Please check your phone/email regularly to keep up to date with information regarding potential lesson cancellations due to instructor illness (or any other reason).

  • Swimmers are encouraged to bring their own goggles.
